PART ONE: denim exploration
Given the challenge to create a denim-based textile project, I turned to an unexpected source — Frank Miller's graphic novel Sin City. His high contrast black and white illustrations reminded me of the contrasting blue and white of manipulated denim. I went on to create a series of textured denim pieces, translating Miller's graphic world onto textile.
Part two: senior collaboration
Applying what I learned in part one, I created unique textured denim textiles for my collaborative project with BFA Fashion Design student Eli Daniel Odisho. The collection was one of 15 graduate projects shown at the Senior Fashion Show, attended by notable guests including Sarah Burton, Phillip Treacy, Cathy Horyn, and Suzy Menkes. During this time, I had the honor of sharing my denim work with Jean Paul Gaultier during his visit to San Francisco — and the project was later featured on the cover of California Apparel News.
